Christmas at Copper House

December 9, 2025 By //  by Pam Anderson

Each morning, David and I take a little time to share what we are grateful for. Sometimes, it’s big, like when I expressed joy that my good friend’s cancer ordeal was over and she was finally in remission. But often it’s little things that make me happy. Like today when I shared my gratitude that Copper House was finally ready for the holidays and how delighted I was with its festive holiday look. Not because the decor was  fancy or elaborate or OTT. Certainly in years past we’ve spent more time and money to beautify both the interior and the grounds.

This year we spent less but started early. Mid-fall as our summer annuals started to fade and it was time to find a permanent home for our potted perennials, we replaced them with small evergreen trees (half price at the fall perennial sale at our local nursery), along with winter plants and bushes that can survive a potentially harsh winter. In the spring, we’ll plant them somewhere on the Copper House grounds, enhancing landscape for years to come.

These three arborvitaes we planted mid-fall replaced the angel trumpets that beautified this same area from spring through late summer. We’re already looking forward to next spring when we’ll plant these trees on the grounds and bring back the angel trumpets.

Over the holidays these little decorated arborvitaes will brighten our deck. Come January, we’ll remove the adornments, and they will continue to green up this otherwise barren winter space.

We bought this balled tree from a local tree farm. Decorated with lights, bows, and balls, this Norway Spruce is our outdoor Christmas tree. After the holidays, we’ll remove the festive decorations and the lighted tree will continue to make its winter home in the pergola, lighting the way for our Copper House guests.

The owners of the tree farm were nice enough to throw in a few evergreen branches, which allows us to decorate many of our pots and planters. In addition to the greens, we also purchased a few holly bushes for the planters on the deck. Like the arborvitaes, these hollies will beautify this sparse space until spring, when it will be time to plant ferns.

Not all of the greens are live at Copper House! We’ve enjoyed this artificial garland and wreath for years.

We look forward to seeing you this winter. The festive holiday decor will be on display into the new year. After that, there’ll be an abundance welcoming light and greenery to welcome you until those tender pea-green shoots start to emerge this coming spring.
